Start by making the base of the cake. Blend together the butter and the powdered sugar, then add the sour cream to it as well.
Mix in the baking powder and flour. You should be able to create a denser cake batter.
Pat the dough into a buttered baking pan. Bake it for 15 minutes at 340°F.
Create the poppy seed layer. Mix together the sugar, vanilla sugar, milk and poppy seeds in a pot and bring it to a boil. Then add the egg yolks to the mixture and bring it to a boil again.
Spoon out the poppy seed layer onto the cake base while it’s still hot. Place some sour cherries into the poppy seed layer and spread your whipped up egg whites on top.
Bake the cake for 20 minutes at 340°F. After it has rested a bit you can slice it up and serve it!
